Best General View (with Stephen Iles) 2016
Diptych
The second collaborative piece made with Stephen Iles, Best General View, started from my interest in painting’s traditional role in defining the landscapes that surround us, a role now occupied by photography and film. The title comes from the one-time practice of putting signs at sites of outstanding natural beauty to inform the viewer of where the ‘Best General View’ of the location was to be had. This practice was bound up with Romantic notions of the sublime experience in nature and how it could be accessed by all. Presented as a diptych the work also looks at how time and memory folds into the viewing experience.
