Contains Space and Time Twice (with Precious Innes) 2017

Made in collaboration with sculptor Precious Innes, Contains Space and Time Twice was made during a six week residency at The Great Medical Disaster, a temporary art space curated by painter Magnus Quaife. Responding to the temporary nature of the space I wanted to make work which demonstrated in a very simple way a space which would shortly cease to exist. I brought to the space two sets of large packing boxes which had been painted the same on each side. Setting the two sets of boxes up side by side in identical formation I moved a part of my set forward and Precious then had to respond so that her boxes matched mine exactly. She then moved her boxes and I had to respond so the boxes again matched exactly. In this way we slowly moved both sets of boxes through the space, keeping them in matching formation each step of the way. A photograph was taken at each point of rest.
The work is presented as a diptych. One screen is a stop motion animation composed from the photographs taken at each resting point. The other screen is the real time recording of the entire process.
