‘Dislocate’ came out of a two week residency as part of CCA Derry-Londonderry’s exhibition ‘Fast Slow Fast’. I wanted to experiment with how I could travel with the large scale collaborative work I had been focussing on recently, without the costs or huge waste associated with so much touring art. I decided to use only materials which I could source in Derry at no cost, bringing only video and digital materials with me to use within the project. The wood and paints used came from CCA’s wood waste store and the projectors and other equipment used came from CCA and other local galleries.
I worked again with a number of collaborators including dancer/choreographers Janie Doherty and Lydia Swift, local art students Molly McFadden and Gordon Cresswell, CCA intern Hannah Davis and artist Nicola Dale. The site was a vacant retail unit in the same shopping centre, where I spent much of my teenage years, and was open to the public for the duration of the residency. In the shop window we had three screens where I showed edits of recordings from previous days and the residency finished with a tour of the site and a public talk about the work we had done whilst there. After the exhibition closed all materials were returned to where they had come from with virtually no waste generated.
