Feedback at The Pink Room
‘Feedback’ was a residency arranged at The Pink Room at YES, Manchester in between lockdowns. Generally a very busy gig and club venue I wanted to use my time in the space to consider both what had become of these rooms which are designed for mass gatherings of bodies, as well as reflecting on where those bodies were without these rooms to escape to. I decided to fill the room with depictions of the everyday household objects which its former inhabitants were currently spending their nights amongst, objects which are generally not allowed in spaces where we go to forget our everyday realities.
As I worked in the space I also started to think about my earliest days of clubbing and attending gigs in how much of this time had been spent alone but surrounded by people. I made a short film about these experiences, reflecting on what it meant to club alone and how it affected an experience which is generally sold as a communal transportive experience.
The rest of my time in the space was spent working on a number of experiments with movement with the painted objects I spent my days there with. As my time there continued i started to introduce sounds into my experiments as well as working with a lot of the physical gestures I associate with club spaces, as well as the memories I have attached to gigs and nights of dancing in various cities.
